This route is located from south east of Mount Kilimanjaro and beginnings with short drive from Moshi town to Marangu gate. This Is the oldest and well-established route with its nickname of Coca-Cola route which derived from the fact of being the only route people sleep in the hut instead of tents as other route. Marangu route is considered as the easiest route on Mount Kilimanjaro due to its gradual slope, although in the real fact should not be considered as the fact of truth and despise the necessary required preparation.

This route has its own test of adventure, scenery, and challenge and in contrary to other route, it offers a comfort sleep in the shared mountain hut with solar light and comfortable sponge mattress. The uniqueness of the route is that it is the only route where client will get time to visit Zebra rocks located close to mawenzi peak. The trek uses the same route for hiking up and down and offer a great view and panoramic vistas. This hike can be climbed in five days, although at we as Kiliwings Expedition we recommend a 6 days hike with better acclimatization at Horombo hut with Zebra rock visit.

You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your arranged hotel in Moshi town. You will meet our professional  guide who will brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure you have all the necessary mountain gear. Gear which is missing can be rented on this day.

After breakfast, you will be collected from your hotel in Moshi and taken to the Marangu gate. Once the necessary paperwork has been completed, your trek can begin, and you will soon be hiking through the dense rainforest. Alongside the impressive vegetation, you will have the chance to catch a glimpse of some primates as you head to the Mandara Hut. After a well-earned rest, your guide can take you to the Maundi Crater where you can enjoy the wonderful view. At the end of the day, the mountains heather and bearded lichen to show themselves for the first time. You will realize the diversity of the mountain.

The mandara a frane huts where you will sleep, feature solar-powered lighting, while water is supplied from a stream and there are flush toilets. As you will be sleeping in dormitory style accommodation with other.

The day begins with an early breakfast. Shortly after you have left Mandara Hut, you will reach the timberline and then enter the heath and moor zone. Approximately 4 – 6 hours later, the Horombo Hut will come into sight, standing at an altitude of 3700m. Several hours after lunch you will have to complete an acclimatization hike in the direction of Kibo Hut with a 200-meter gain in altitude, and then hike back down to Horombo Hut where dinner will be prepared for you.

Note: 

  • The acclimatization hike is an easy trek with a slight gain in altitude done in order to speed up the acclimatization process. You should take the acclimatization hikes very seriously. They help increase your chances of successfully summiting Kilimanjaro and save you from the consequences of altitude sickness.

FROM MANDARA HUT TO HOROMBU HUT

  • Accommodation: dormitory accommodation in horombo huts

Today’s stage is long and tough. The well-built trail passes the “Last Water point” which is followed by the so-called “saddle”. This nearly vegetation less plateau joins the main summit Kibo with Mawenzi. Today’s destination is the Kibo Hut that is usually reached in about 6-8hours. Here, you will enjoy an early evening meal followed by an early night, as the night will be short.

Today is “The Big Day” – the summit stage. You will begin your final ascent around midnight which will be long and strenuous. Passing the Hans Meyer Cave at 5220m, the climb slowly but surely goes upwards. At sunrise, you will reach Gillman’s Point (5681m) – the crater rim of Kilimanjaro – where the sun will slowly start to warm up the land. You will have soon forgotten the cold of the night and after a further hike of 1 – 2 hours, you will reach Uhuru Peak at 5895m. On your return to Kibo Hut, a warm meal awaits you followed by a 1 – 2-hour break before proceeding back down to Horombo Hut.

  • Journey time and altitudes: between 10-13hrs walking climbing from 4700m at kibo hut to Uhuru peak at 5895m then return to 3720m at Horombo Hut.

The last stage passes through the heath and moor zone to the Mandara Hut (2700m) where a warm lunch is waiting for you. Soon, you will once again pass the tropical rainforest and after a total time of 6 hours trekking, you will be back at the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1970m). After saying goodbye to your mountain guides, a short transfer follows to take you back to your hotel in Moshi. Once there, you can take a warm and relaxing shower and celebrate your success in reaching the summit of the Kilimanjaro.
